Why did the design change?
A new portrait, a different reverse, a redrawn legend. Something happened, and the coin remembers it.
Marcus Hale
The voice behind NARQEN
He is less interested in finding a fortune than in learning why a design changed, where a coin travelled and how a collection can hold those details together.
Every part has a question attached to it
Marcus’s story begins with a handful of unfamiliar coins and a notebook full of questions. He begins with ordinary pieces, writes down what he can observe and leaves space for what he still needs to discover.
A date, a legend, a small letter under the portrait, a reeded edge. Five things on one object, and each one is somebody’s decision from a long time ago.
A new portrait, a different reverse, a redrawn legend. Something happened, and the coin remembers it.
A mint mark, a denomination, an unfamiliar legend. Small marks that place a coin somewhere.
A number, a holder, a photograph and a line in a catalogue that still makes sense in five years.
The detail that answers a question is almost never the one you noticed first. It is usually smaller, on the edge, or hiding under the portrait.
So he writes down what he can see, then looks again, and only afterwards goes to a reference. A match should agree with several features, not one.

Look carefully, record honestly and leave room to learn.
He starts with ordinary pieces — the change in a jar, a coin from a holiday, something inherited without a story attached — because those are the ones you can practise on without worrying.
When a coin needs someone who knows more, the guides say so instead of offering a shortcut.
They are introductory hobby guides, not price lists, appraisals or investment advice. They do not certify authenticity, do not replace an appropriate specialist assessment, and claim no professional grading expertise, museum employment or awards.
A theme you can follow, a repeatable way to observe a coin, and a catalogue you will still understand years from now. And a clear reminder: avoid polishing or casually cleaning collectible coins.
Three digital guides: choose a theme, learn to read a coin and keep the details that matter.
Every NARQEN product is a digital PDF ebook. Book-shaped images are visual previews. No printed book, coins, holders or equipment will be shipped.
